Will a past felony conviction prevent me from enrolling or getting hired as a sonographer?UMI does not require a criminal background check for admission into the Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS) programs. However, please be aware that: UMI’s clinical externship partners typically require students to pass a background check before being allowed to participate in hands-on clinical training. Completion of the externship is required to graduate. Hospitals and healthcare employers also conduct background checks as part of their hiring process. Some employers may have restrictions related to certain types of offenses—especially those involving patient safety, controlled substances, or fraud. Each case is unique. The impact of a felony conviction can vary depending on the nature of the offense, the state or facility’s policies, and how much time has passed since the conviction. UMI strongly recommends that students with past convictions consult with a licensed attorney or legal aid organization in their area to better understand how their background may affect clinical placement and employment opportunities in the healthcare field. UMI supports students in making informed choices and encourages transparency when planning for a successful career. Refer to Criminal Background Policy stated in UMI Catalog: https://www.unitedmedicalinstitute.edu/umi-catalog
